I Told You So, or The Power of Visualization

Daniel W Basista - September Issue

We all love to say, "I told you so!" And you have to do it with just the right intonation. As a matter of fact the words one uses are not all that important. For example; "See!" or "Didn't I say this would happen?", or a host of other ways it can be said. It all comes down to the almost universal desire we humans have to be right.

Let's take a closer look at this phenomenon, especially to how it relates to our health. Have you ever made a dire prediction, and it came true? In some perverse way, isn't that one of the most satisfying "I told you so!"s of all?
Try this on for size; "Every time someone sniffles near me, I catch a cold." Followed within a few days of exposure by the exclamation, "See."
Do the words, "self-fulfilling prophecy", mean anything to you? Sure, you needed to already have been susceptible to catching a cold. (Meaning your immune system had to have been depressed) But, the prophecy itself also has a lot to do with it. Mental state is, after all, one of the strongest factors in determining our health.

Have you ever known someone that only gets sick on the first day of their vacations? The person that "can't afford to get sick", at least not while they have responsibilities. That is the power of the mind!

The mind does not know the difference between reality and what we consistently think about. Or, to quote Flip Wilson; "What you seez is what you gits." If you see yourself getting sick, you expect to get sick, and you prepare to be sick; chances are you are going to get sick.

Don't get me wrong, everyone gets sick at some time. However, if you see yourself as healthy, you expect to be healthy, and you work to stay healthy; chances are you are going to be healthy most of the time. You are what you predominantly think you are.

That is the simple reason that we pay as much attention as we do to our environment here in this office. We work hard to foster a positive, healing environment. A bright, energetic color scheme, upbeat music, healthy snacks (mostly), smiling faces and positive attitudes are all in place to foster a positive attitude in our patients. So, when people tell us that their visit to our office is often the highlight of their day, it is a wonderful compliment. It tells us we are on the right track. So please, think healthy!
